A Butt as Big as the Sky Song Funny

  • ABC's new thriller Big Sky has a soundtrack to match its exciting, Montana-set story.
  • The show's music supervisor, Frankie Pine, let us know what went into picking the songs you hear in each chapter of showrunner David E. Kelley's new series.
  • We'll be tracking every song from Big Sky Season 1 right here.

Music plays a role from the very first moment of ABC's new thriller series Big Sky. In a diner set scene, we see two main characters—one feeling happy, one feeling incredibly downtrodden—as a feel-good oldie song plays over the acti0n. The juxtaposition of the two women's moods works from the first moment in almost the same way that damn song that always plays in Black Mirror works in that show; what we're seeing doesn't match the mood on screen. And as Big Sky continues, that principals proves truer and truer—with the music continuing to play an undeniable tonal role in the wild events taking place on-screen.

This isn't the first time that showrunner David E. Kelley has been behind a show deserving of acclaim for its musical offerings; Kelley was at the helm for two seasons of HBO's Big Little Lies, which had a brilliant soundtrack to match its pitch black comedy/drama tone. He's currently also behind HBO's The Undoing, which has its own great music selections. Even Ally McBeal, Kelley's legal hit from the '90s, had top-selling soundtrack albums released in coordination. Big Sky, marking Kelley's return to broadcast television, is looking to keep that music streak going.

Set in a gorgeous, regal, Montana setting, Big Sky first and foremost wants its music to just feel right. If we're watching a fight scene, the music feels like fight scene music. If we're watching a couple teens embark upon a road trip, well, that's high time for some Lizzo. Music in a show either needs to make sense, or it needs to be shocking. And Big Sky finds time to fit both in.

"There's nothing better than music making you feel like you're in the setting. We wanted to feel each of the character's personal journeys too," Big Sky music supervisor Frankie Pine says. "It's amazing to find varying genres and styles, some sweet, some dark…which makes for a beautiful landscape eclectic, vast and unknown…a bit like Montana."

With a cast that includes Kylie Bunbury (who previously starred in FOX's underrated sports series Pitch ), Ryan Philippe, and the great John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Zodiac, The Trial of the Chicago 7), Big Sky has the chance to be one of the fall season's breakout serial dramas, and the music makes sure to match the characters we see on screen. In addition to the teens we see on a road trip, we've also got a couple private investigators, a weirdo state trooper, and a sociopathic trucker, among others. And the show makes it a point for each character to have musical cues to match—and in some cases, the music could even inform what's about to come; or at least leave audiences wondering.

"There are so many amazing characters in the show…giving each of them a unique voice through music defines them even further and helps propel their story," Pine says. "What's so fun about working on this type of show is what one little twist of music can do to change how you feel about a character, story or plot. I like coming from an unexpected place musically…"

And as Big Sky moves its twisty-turvy story forward, the music will keep pace. Below, we're tracking each song the show deploys throughout the course of its first season. If you can keep up, we'll be here.
